Gemini Canvas: Google's Free AI Coder and Interactive Space
Download MP30:00: It's amazing, isn't it, how quickly things are changing in AI.
0:02: It seems like every week there's something new and, more powerful than the last, and this week's no different.
0:09: It's actually pretty wild what we're going to deep dive on today, this new upgrade to to Canvas, you know, for our listeners who haven't heard of it yet, Canvas is a free interactive space where you can refine documents, you can refine code.
0:22: And but what's really cool is that they just added this audio overview feature and it transforms your files into what they're calling engaging podcast discussions, which, you know, as podcasters is obviously very intriguing for us.
0:38: Yeah, I mean, obviously it's something that we're very interested in, right?
0:41: I mean, who wouldn't be right, it's a it's a way for you, the listener to You know, quickly understand and work with complex information which, you know, like, I mean, how much time do we waste just reading through dense reports, right?
0:55: I know.
0:56: Or, you know, the long pieces of code.
0:58: I mean this is.
0:59: This is, this is a huge time saver.
1:01: And this just came out in the same week as that new state of the art AI model, you know, open weighted, and it's, it's supposedly outperforming a lot of the other models out there right now, and it's weighted, so that means that we can, we can see inside, right?
1:17: We can see how it works, which is a big step, right for transparency and for for trust in these models.
1:22: Yeah, for sure.
1:24: They've added this code with a visualization.
1:28: So as you're building it, you can actually see visually shape.
1:32: And then on top of that it's got the ability to transform your files into these, you know, aging a podcast.
1:40: Yeah, I mean it sounds like it's tailored towards the learner.
1:42: It really does sound like it's for people who want to learn and I think that's, right?
1:48: I think that's most of our listeners.
1:49: I think so too.
1:50: I think so too.
1:51: it sounds a lot like, you know, if you're familiar with other AI tools, this sounds a lot like, you know, the artifacts that some of those have, yeah, yeah, I know, but this has, this has more features and works with more modality, like and audio, and it's powered by this series of 2.0 models, including Flash and Pro.
2:15: So this is, this is really like next level, right?
2:18: This is not just, you know, a small step.
2:20: This is a big jump in in what's possible with these tools.
2:24: It sounds like it's meant for the learner because you know you can do so much with this.
2:28: You can write, you can iterate, you can preview code like what kind of you know, like react and OK, so like.
2:35: kind of web development, yeah HTML and that's useful.
2:40: You can draft and edit documents.
2:42: You can build interactive prototypes, games, visualizations.
2:46: that's it's, that's incredible.
2:48: I mean that's that's really putting the power of AI the hands of anyone who wants to create, right and you know that's that's something.
2:56: That we at Stonefly.com have always believed in, right?
3:00: Making technology accessible, making it powerful, but also user friendly.
3:04: And you know, that's been our mission for for over two decades now as a sand technology pioneer and and as a solution company, you know, serving serving our customers in this deep dive into these, these latest technological advancements.
3:17: is brought to you by Stonefly.com.
3:19: Yes, it is.
3:20: Stonefly has been the pioneer in sand technology for over two decades, you know, serving customers as a solution company, and their expertise in data and innovation makes them a perfect partner for exploring these cutting edge AI tools.
3:34: Absolutely, you can find out more about them at iSchos-z.com or Stonefly.com, or you can reach out to them directly at sales at stonefly.com.
3:45: Yeah, they're they're great people over there.
3:46: OK, so let's dive into into what this upgraded canvas can do.
3:50: All right, let's let's hear it.
3:51: So we saw a demo of it creating a functional stock market component and honestly it's Really impressive.
3:58: Like what did, what did it do?
4:00: It wasn't just like a basic output.
4:02: Like it had working buttons, visualizations for several major stocks like, you know, think of like, you know, your big tech companies and, yeah, and it tracked their performance.
4:15: Time periods, like a week or a month.
4:17: OK, so like a like a real-time stock tracker.
4:20: OK, that's, that's pretty impressive.
4:22: I mean, to be able to generate something like that that quickly and it had a deep research agent right there integrated in the workspace so it allowed the outputs whether they're You know, document or lines of code to be configured and visualized.
4:38: So you weren't just see what's going on a little bit, yeah, you weren't just like the raw information.
4:44: You're getting it in a in a way that makes sense.
4:46: Yeah, in a meaningful and insightful way.
4:50: And then the audio overview feature like we can take.
4:53: Your documents, your presentations, even research reports and transform them into what they're calling engaging podcast style discussions between AI hosts.
5:04: So and this feature was actually integrated from another project that was focused on research and knowledge management.
5:12: Interesting.
5:12: So imagine, so it's it's pulling from.
5:14: From from other other work that's been done in this area.
5:18: OK, yeah, imagine taking a lengthy, you know, and being able to just listen to an AI powered and of its key points, especially for like, you know, those those long reports that nobody has time to read.
5:31: I know this could be a game changer for for how we consume.
5:35: Information.
5:36: Yeah, for sure.
5:37: So getting started with Canvas looks pretty straightforward.
5:40: You basically just toggle it on within the application.
5:43: Oh, easy, yeah, and we'll be sure to include a link in the description for you.
5:48: Good, good.
5:48: And so to give you a practical illustration, imagine prompting it to create a simple chess game.
5:55: Using the Gemini 2.0 flash model, which is a very fast and efficient model, it generated the code remarkably quickly.
6:03: And almost instantly a live visual representation of the game appeared so you could, you can actually play the chess game that it created.
6:12: That's, that's amazing.
6:13: And then you have the ability to export and download that code.
6:16: Oh, that's great.
6:16: So whether you're collaborating on a project or you just want to keep a local copy, sure, sure, it's super easy, but here's where it gets really interesting.
6:24: One feature that really stood out to us was the ability to highlight a specific section of the generated code.
6:30: And then ask the AI model to explain it.
6:33: And they're saying that this is, this is far superior to other apps and it's easy to see why, because then you can actually understand what the code is doing.
6:42: You're not just, you know, blindly copying and pasting and you're actually learning from it.
6:46: It's especially useful for for debugging that AI generated code, you know, imagine asking it.
6:53: Explain this code segment for me, please.
6:55: And it provides this detailed breakdown of what that.
6:58: Particular part of the code is doing.
7:00: I mean that's an immense help.
7:01: That's for anybody who's trying to learn how to code or trying to understand the logic behind what the AI is output, right?
7:09: And it's it's also a great way to learn, right?
7:11: Because you can, you can see how the AI is thinking about the problem and how it's it's structuring the code's AI canvas you can actually.
7:25: different models for different tasks.
7:27: OK.
7:28: And you know, while Canvas leverages the Gemini 2.0 flash, which is really fast, it's good to know that you have access to other more powerful models if you need that for more intensive tasks and even that deep research that we were talking about that also has visualization capabilities so you can see how the report is being generated as it's going so you can kind of see it see it it's working.
7:51: Yeah, it's pretty neat.
7:52: So switching gears a little bit to data visualization, the process looks really intuitive.
7:58: You can upload your data.
8:00: The AI uses its vision capabilities to extract the content, so the AI can see it and interpret it, and then you can just start giving it prompts.
8:10: So like what kind of prompts are we talking about?
8:12: So for example, you could ask Canvas to generate tables for me based off the data that I provided.
8:18: OK, so it.
8:19: It can take like raw data and turn it into into something that's more visually appealing, more, more easy to understand, OK, but it doesn't stop there.
8:29: It's actually an interactive process.
8:31: You can work with the AI to like change the length of the table.
8:35: You can add further analysis.
8:37: You can change the tone of the output, and you can even get suggestions for improvement with a single click.
8:43: Wow.
8:43: So it's it's really like a collaboration.
8:46: and the AI, yeah, that's, that's amazing.
8:48: Yeah, it's pretty neat.
8:49: So now talking about creating prototypes, you know, imagine you want to, you want to develop a basic app.
8:56: They prompted Canvas to create me a diet tracking app where I can log my calories, and it generated, you know, an initial version of this calorie tractor.
9:06: But what's really cool is that you can then refine it further with natural language prompts.
9:12: So they said, Can you make it a bit more appealing for me?
9:15: And it generated a revised version.
9:17: Then they requested dark mode.
9:19: Oh, boom, updated again.
9:21: The final version of this app included features like, you know, setting a daily calorie goal, adding food items with their calorie counts, tracking your daily intake, and even visualizing your progress with a pie graph.
9:33: Wow, so it's, it's a, it's a full featured app, just from, from the couple of prompts.
9:39: That's incredible.
9:39: And you can see each generation happening live, which is really neat.
9:44: And just like the code generation feature, you have the ability to export the code for this prototype as well.
9:51: So you can actually you can take it and run with it if you want to.
9:55: That's awesome.
9:55: And you know, we should also mention that this deep dive into, you know, the latest technological advancements is brought to you by.
10:03: Stonefly.com.
10:05: Yes, it is.

10:43: Yeah, you know, don't, don't take our word for it.
10:44: Go go play with it.
10:45: See what you can create, I mean, The the possibilities are really endless with this kind of technology, especially with the Gemini 2.0 model.
10:54: Yeah, and you know it's it's just getting better all the time.
10:57: So who knows what we'll be able to do with this in a year in 5 years or 10 years.
11:01: And again, big thank you to Stonefly.com, the true pioneer in sand technology and a solution company serving its.
11:08: Customers for over 20 years.

11:28: Yeah, they're, they're a great resource.
11:30: So finally, let's leave you with this thought.
11:33: How might tools like Canvas fundamentally reshape not only how we write code, create documents, but also the very way that we learn and share information in the future, especially with the integration of the audio and visual.
11:50: What entirely new forms of knowledge sharing might become possible thanks to these advancements.
11:58: It's that's something to think about.
11:59: It's an exciting time to be alive.
12:01: It really is.
12:02: It's, it's amazing to see what's happening in the world of AI and to think about what the future holds.
12:08: It's, it's really, it's really exciting.
12:10: Yeah, I'm, I'm optimistic.
12:12: I think, I think we're, we're on the cusp of of something truly, truly amazing.
12:16: Yeah, I agree.
12:16: So, so yeah, I'm, I'm excited to see what happens next.
12:19: Me too, me too.
12:20: All right, thanks for joining us.
12:21: Yeah, thanks for having me for this deep dive.
12:23: Absolutely.
